We arrived back in Siena at around one a.m. I should have been tired, but, in fact, the visit to Monteriggioni had energized me. And probably because of that or because of the coffee I drank that day and the several days before that one, I was too keyed up to sleep.

I made more coffee and opened the windows wide to let the night enter. It felt romantic, and I wondered if the night was still holding some treasures for me to discover. No, I couldn’t sleep.

I looked for my mac and started my research on Google. I searched for “Verde e Siena,” “Verde e Clara,” “Verde e recitazione,” and used many other keywords, but nothing promising came up.

I took Mario’s file and read the story again. Verde was an actress, she was a close friend to Clara, but where was she now? She had fallen in love with someone she met at the Umbria Jazz Festival, but did she live in Perugia? Near there? I searched for hours, going back and forth to the story, looking for clues and details. By the end of the night, I knew that story by heart, and could recite it as a poem, word by word, exactly as Mario had written it. But I had found nothing.

I went to my balcony to breathe in some fresh air, and sat there thinking about the story and the photograph. Mario said Clara had introduced Verde to him as someone who would become a movie star. But what if she never became one? If she had, Mario might have heard of her.

As I was thinking and searching through my thoughts, a poster across the alley captured my attention. Yellow, red, and green waves were wrapping three smiling and welcoming faces, and below them, in big, white letters, the poster read, “Compagnia della Luna al Teatro del Popolo. Rapolano Terme.”

Verde was an actress. But what if she was a stage actress?

I went back to my computer and renewed my search. “Verde in teatro,” “Verde a teatro”… “compagnia teatrale e Verde,” “compagnia teatrale Verde”…I found it! Or something. A “Compagnia Teatrale Verde” was performing Amicizia at the Teatro Sistina in Roma. Their last performance would be the next day. Verde might well be an actress in that group.

I clicked on the link to the performance and looked for Verde’s name among the actors, but it wasn’t there. There were three characters in the play and the only female part was played by a woman named Camilla, who appeared to be in her forties. But a theatre company may have more than three actors, I thought, so I continued my search and looked for a list of other performances by the same compagnia. The Compania Teatrale Verde had performed in many of the most prestigious theatres in Italy, including the San Carlo in Napoli, and the Manzoni and the Arcimboldi in Milano. The reviews of their most recent performances were strong.

I found the troupe’s home page and read each actor’s bio.
